Now that we are at the height of the summer, most of us are reflecting on what happened to us in the early spring, when the coronavirus pandemic began to impact our lives. Many people told me how much MAFNIFICAT meant to them during that time. A slower life, like slow food, may make it easier to digest the goodness the Lord wants to share with us: particularly, the goodness of prayer.

This month’s saints remind us of how many forms the life of prayer can take. Searching passionately for God through the life of the mind, like Saint Augustine. Going on the road to find and rescue souls, one at a time, like Saint Dominic. Suffering for the faith, like Saint Lawrence or Saint Maximilian. And interceding with all our hearts, liked Saint Monica, and of course that greatest saint of all: Mary the Mother of God. Leonie Caldecott

The Magnificat

My Soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God the Saviour.

He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all generations will call me blessed.

The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy is his name.

His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him.

He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud hearted.

He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly.

He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty.

He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy,

The mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever.

Glory be to the Father….Amen.
