Officially opened on 29th July 1984 Carrick Sports Ground was the result of years of work and fundraising going as back to 1977 (the YouTube clip bellow from the opening ceremony has all the details), the opening days events were a National School challenge match between Carrick and Cashel, a match between 1974 and 1984 Naomh Columba senior teams and finally Donegal and Derry minor teams played a challenge match. The pitch was used for a few GAA matches in the following years; it was used for sports days by the local schools and in the 90s by Carrick Town soccer club for a few seasons and one of the biggest crowds there was for the ladies soccer’s team’s first match in the late 80s. While there were big plans to develop the grounds into an athletics track and venue, a swimming pool was also mentioned it still lies vacant slowing returning to bog where it all began.
